Song Selection: Wild Horses – Rolling Stones

RigelSeven’s Take:

As with the other contestants, Katie missed a few notes here and there.  I know I sound like a broken record, but she so clearly has a better voice than most of the other singers.  I’m pleased that the judges were happy as I think Katie needs the confidence going forward to push her voice and take chances.  She has the ability to contend for the title but needs to step up her stage presence and connection to the songs to reassert herself.  This was a step in the right direction.

Chindi’s Take:
Wild Horses is a beautiful song. The only knock against this song selection is that it’s been covered by more than a few people, including some very talented female singers (possibly my favorite cover version is Mazzy Star), I’m not sure it’s possible for her to do this song and not have it being compared to some other beautiful version of the song. I think Katie tried hard, she started a little rough in her lower register but held it together through most of the song with only a little pitchiness and she held it together well. She did build on the Mazzy Star version of the song, rather than the Stones version, and did some re-arranging on the back half to keep from being called a sound-alike. Objectively, this was a good performance and a good song choice for Katie, it should get her some breathing room and let people forget about some of the not-quite-there performances of the past three weeks.
