Song Selection: Beast of Burden – Rolling Stones
RigelSeven’s Take:
Lee took the song and fit it into his little adult pop/rock box. It was a decent performance and he started to stretch out his vocals some but not quite enough. He needs to come out one week and just go balls to wall with a song that lets him really open up his voice. My pet peeve with the performance was the enunciation. Please sing the words clearly. I continue to not be very moved by Lee. I didn’t dislike the performance, I just wasn’t very impressed either. He’s still solidly in the middle of the pack though, so he has no worries tomorrow.
Chindi’s Take:
This was a good take on this song, Lee made a little tweak to the musical arrangement to take it away from the original and counted on his distinctive raspy voice to take it the rest of the way. He stepped away from that ‘rocker’ zone that they wanted to put him into, which I think is a good bet for him because getting stuck in the ‘rocker’ zone is just death in this competition. The one knock I have on Lee is the knock I had on Lilly at the end, at some point it’s not enough that you’re singing a song with your quirky voice, at some point you have to bring something different with that voice or you’re going to be taking it home.
Simon puts it a lot better than I did, Lee needs to have a moment where he seizes the moment and just takes control and mastery of the stage and the audience.
