Las Vegas Day 2 is here and the acts put into Group “B”, The Standbys, are fighting for 11 remaining spots in the top 48. At the end of the episode we see 12 acts get the good news but that makes up for the missing one yesterday, and it looks like Paul Safy, Jr. did make it to Hollywood.
As with yesterday’s show, credibility is stretched a bit and I really feel some of the spots were wasted on acts who shouldn’t be moving on to the live shows. It could just be that the producers want some cannon fodder to protect the acts that have gotten the most screen time to this point (a common practice on American Idol).
The Group “B” Acts who advanced to the Live Shows in Hollywood after performing tonight:
Danger Acts
Kung Fu Heroes, Ages 21-33 – Martial Artists
Oh, ho, ho, ho, Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting to Hollywood.
Jeremy Vanschoonhoven, Age 27 – Bike Tricks
Jeremy has built a bigger obstacle course and has quit his job to train for the show. The training pays off as Jeremy makes no mistakes during his routine. Even the other danger acts are impressed by the skill of Jeremy’s act but wonder if it’s sustainable as a show.
Kid Dancers
RNG “Rated Next Generation”, Ages 11-13 – Dancers
RNG seems to have lost a member as there are only 5 girls for this performance. Maybe she just couldn’t make the trip? If anyone knows, leave a comment please. Anyway, RNG are basically in direct competition with Northwest Dance & Acro, also from the Portland auditions. RNG performs to the Black Eyed Peas “Imma Be” and the choreography is pretty tight. Northwest may be more flexible but I find RNG more interesting.
Vocal Groups
NU Covenant, Ages 18-23 – Gospel Group
The boys sing “Ain’t To Proud To Beg” and I like it better than their audition.
Christina and Ali, Ages 13 & 20 – Singers
Christina and Ali improve on their audition with their rendition of Carrie Underwood’s “Temporary Home”. I still think they get put through because of their story. They’re adorable and they’re decent singers but if you judge them in a vacuum I don’t think they make it. It will be interesting to see how they do once the public starts voting.
Novelty
Ronith, Age 58 – Impersonator
An absolutely wasted spot. Calling Ronith an impersonator before was a stretch, now it’s not even accurate. He does a one man play about waking up in the morning. The other novelty acts who didn’t get through will be in therapy for years. How did Piers let this happen?
Bands
The Strange Familiar, Ages 27 & 27 – Singers/musicians
The band was a duo at their audition, now there are 4 members. The key to this group is the lead singer and while I’m don’t think she hit the glory note quite right in John Hiatt’s “Have a Little Faith In Me”, she’s a really good singer.
Iron Horse, Ages 22-27 – Band
As with their audition, we don’t see much of this band and their name isn’t even mentioned in the episode. They perform a rockabilly number to get through. They are different than the other musical acts but we haven’t seen any back stage or interview footage of them.
Airpocalypse, Ages 22-40 – Air Band
Another wasted spot. They even show footage of the frustration of the real bands that these guys are being taken seriously. I don’t know what else to say, they may be entertaining goofs but please get off my talent show, you’re taking space away from real musicians.
Male Singers
They really hammer the point that they have too many male singers this year and the cuts will be hard. In this episode we saw 6 or 7 singers. Basically, if your name wasn’t mentioned, you didn’t get through.
Luigi Seno, Age 20 -Singer/Guitarist
Luigi sings another laid back song and it’s really good. Sharon seems to be taking his laid back style as a lack of effort or interest but Piers and Howie are picking up what Luigi’s putting down. Not bad for 20 year old with almost no experience.
Nathaniel Kenyon, Age 19 – Singer
Nate seems to have worked out a little of his nerves and does a reasonable cover of “Someday” by Rob Thomas. He’s got potential and he showed improvement over his audition, so it’s not a surprise that he gets through.
Act From Yesterday (I think…)
Paul Safy Jr., Age 26 – Singer
Poor Paul got about 2 seconds of screen time tonight and wasn’t even mentioned on Tuesday. I’m still not 100% sure he got through but this is my best guess.
And there we have it. Next week, 12 acts will perform live for America’s vote. Be back here for a full rundown of everyone’s performance.
