It’s results show time!  Who will get the last four spots?  12 wild card acts got a second chance to make the semifinals on Tuesday night.  The top 3 acts, based on America’s vote, will advance to the semifinals.  The judges will then select either the 4th or 5th place act for the 4th act to advance to the semifinals.  Looking back at my post from Tuesday, I predicted Anna & Patryk, Michael Grasso, Michael Lipari & Ashleigh Dejon, and Connor Doran would advance and my own personal opinion of the acts is that Anna & Patryk, Michael Grasso, Michael Lipari & Ashleigh Dejon, and RNG should advance.  Did America agree with my opinion that two acts who didn’t even make the original top 48 and two acts who just missed out in their original quarterfinal should advance?  Let’s get this show started and find out.

After a quick recap of the show and some banter with the judges it’s time for some results.

Nick calls out Kruti Dance Academy, Michael Grasso, Swing Shift Side Show, and Rudi Macaggi.  This would have to be Michael Grasso.  And the act advancing to the semifinals is Michael Grasso!  Vindication for what was an unjust cut prior to the top 48.

Next we get a performance from Criss Angel.  He references Houdini and then has the judges verify that the straitjacket is real and has them buckle him into the jacket.  He attempts the upside down straitjacket escape once performed by Houdini in 5 minutes.  Criss is going for 1 minute.  The music and lights start and Criss starts spinning to free himself.  He finishes with one second left.  Next Criss is lowered into a box and the box is tied closed.  A woman dances over to the box and climbs on top of it and then smoke appears and the lights go out for a second and then Criss is the one on top of the box and the woman is inside the box.  Nice show.

Nick calls out the Hot Shot Tap Dancers, RNG, and Anna & Patryk.  I would be shocked if Anna & Patryk don’t make it.  And the act advancing to the semifinals is Anna & Patryk!  I thought they should have made it previously so good show.

Nick calls out CJ Dippa and Connor Doran.  CJ was off last night and everyone was inspired by Connor so I think Connor will make it.  And the act advancing to the semifinals is Connor Doran!  I don’t think CJ is ready for this yet so it’s a good choice and I’m 3 for 3 on my predictions.

Before we find out who the final act to get into the semifinals is we get a performance from Country superstar LeAnn Rimes.  LeAnn is feeling a little frisky today as she perform “Swingin’” in an old school style bikini in front of an image of the beach.  Good, fun performance.

Nick calls out the final three acts, Doogie Horner, Harmonica Pierre, and Michael Lipari & Ashleigh Dejon.  Two will face the judges but first one must be eliminated.  And the eliminated act is Doogie Horner.  So it’s down to Harmonica Pierre and Michael & Ashleigh.  I certainly feel that Michael & Ashleigh should advance over Pierre, as good as Pierre is.  Piers votes for Pierre (no surprise, Piers brought Pierre back).  Sharon votes for Michael & Ashleigh (she brought them back).  Howie votes for Michael & Ashleigh.  And the act advancing to the semifinals is Michael Lipari & Ashleigh Dejon!  Nailed it!  4 for 4 on my predictions!

So, the 4 acts who advance are:  Michael Grasso (Magician), Anna & Patryk (Ballroom Dancers), Connor Doran (Indoor Kite Flyer), and Michael Lipari & Ashleigh Dejon (Aerialists).  You’ll note that 3 of the 4 acts weren’t even named to the top 48 in Las Vegas.

And we finally have our 24 semifinalists:
Nathaniel Kenyon, Christina & Ali, Future Funk, and Fighting Gravity -QF#1;  Alice Tan Ridley, Michael Grimm, AscenDance, and Antonio Restivo-QF#2; Debra Romer, Haspop, Studio One Young Beast Society, and Jeremy Vanschoonhoven-QF#3; Taylor Matthews, Murray, Prince Poppycock, and ArcAttack-QF#4; Jackie Evancho, Kristina Young, Dan Sperry, and Maestro Alexander Bui-QF#5; Anna & Patryk, Michael Grasso, Connor Doran, and Michael Lipari & Ashleigh Dejon-QF#6

Scott, I’m with you on this also. This is my first season watching the show so I don’t know how the semifinals have worked before. I think Nick said the tour shows start in early October so there can’t be more than 8 weeks left before the winner is crowned. If we have two 12 act semifinals that advance 4 acts each for an 8 act finals then 5 weeks of single eliminations would leave a final 3 for the finale. This is a total guess though so I will be waiting to see what Nick says next week.

so Scott…12 semi-finalist compete Tues., and 5 are picked to go into the finals. Then next Tues. the last twelve compete, and 5 more are picked to go into the finals. Then the next week the 10 compete against each other….

its funny cause i have watched every year but season one and the format seems to be diffrent every year. i think in 2007 it did an idol type format where the last 12 were widdled down one by one but now i think its the last 5 acts go head to head the last week. not sure

It was something like that. In the past, there’s always been 10 finalists, from which they narrow it down. In season 2, they went from the top 10 to the final 8 to the final four before they finally choose the winner. The past two seasons they’ve done it as you’ve said: narrow it to the top 5 and then select a winner. I suspect that they’ll do the same this season, even with 24 acts in semis.

wikipedia thinks the format will be the same as the quarterfinals.

so top 3 vote getters and a judges decision? or maybe just the top 3 vote getters?
